the label’s latest offering comes from hamilton himself, who teams up with panick panick! label owner noha, offering a collaborative ep that is a fitting snapshot into the work of both individuals. the nohamilton ep gets underway with ‘lip service’, a rough-and-ready track with firm emphasis on a grinding, hypnotic loop that easily surpasses your average dj tool. highly finessed and progressing steadily, it’s the perfect example of how to do less with more. looking towards more sun-kissed planes, the duo deliver the ep s a2 track, a more heads- down cut that’s loaded with good-time grooves from the get go. sure to work a charm whenever it’s unleashed, ‘bored of life’ serves up an intriguing insight into both producers’ boundless studio output. romanian duo sit culminate matters with their ‘lip service’ rework. consisting of cristi cons and vlad caia, the pair have been excelling consistently, with both their resident advisor mix and latest release on the iconic sushitech label proving a potent reminder of this. taking the listener down the rabbit hole once more, they inject archie hamilton & noha s original with an eerie sheen, also adding an off-kilter baseline that’s hard not to get lost in. a suitably groove-led but unconventional interpretation, it closes off the ep with the sort of distinction we’ve come to expect from moscow.

limited to 250 copies, next up in tartelet’s limited-edition series is renaissance man n.o.t.e. with “night frames” – a compilation of barrel-aged sounds for the warm nights ahead. n.o.t.e. is a new project by an already established artist who might be of swiss or italian origin, depending on who’s asking. a seasoned sailor of musical waters, he enjoys jazz piano, fine wine and silk linens. though none of that matters. the first release under his new name could be described as a mini concept album where different routes are explored, bringing n.o.t.e.’s musical diversity and capabilities to light. starting with “falsa laudis,” n.o.t.e. takes the listener back to the 80s with clear references to italian boogie and jazz-funk of that era. the track is warm, fat and sparkly, and best enjoyed with a cocktail in hand. following this is the title track “night frames” – a bruk-jazz escapade not shy of elaborate rhodes solos and filthy funk. the b-side opener moves further south: “obaleyako” is fueled by tropical energy, mixing african percussions with soft piano chords. it’s weird, mysterious and red hot! last but not least, n.o.t.e takes on the finest deep house sound with “en route,” where endless layered melodies and percussion form the farewell. this is an ultra limited-edition release of 250 copies (strictly no repress!), written and produced by n.o.t.e. and mixed at panalama studios in copenhagen on the neve 5088 shelford console for good measure. enjoy!

clubbing is a source of euphoria: a weekly, often daily escape, a respite from the grind. that culture and its landmarks – some of london’s best venues and many countless pubs - are slowly disappearing for good. on last night, which was recorded in all four corners of london with marc pell (micachu and the shapes), lv, rob marfarlane and james anderson, benin city take an album-long look at the dual nature of london’s nightlife.

for this first release badam music wants to remind us that nothing beats a good house groove. the renowned electronic producer from germany matthias vogt previously half of motorcitysoul comes with a classy house track called roger. catchy bassline and solid drum workout with precisely arranged snares, drum hits and sparse cymbals meet beautiful synths, vocal snippets and making things perfectly balanced. uk rising talent huxley delivers a handy dj weapon with his muscular remix and brings a different vision with a rough groove.

mathias schaffhauser, founder of german label ware records debuts on third ear with a 3 track 12inch. this is big-sky, expansive, driving techno even the beatless version of grad minus 12. mathias schaffhaeusers ware records had a very recognisable sound. it was one of the defining labels of the cologne sound, most associated with kompakt these days. but in the 90s and early 00s, ware was as significant a label, especially for djs. this release is very much a good example of that sound, still sounding fresh and bristling with good energy.

ground is an osaka native, but his soul is truly that of a nomad, traversing the planet, befriending kindred spirits found in humans, animals and plants. he is exceptionally receptive to the beauty in everything that surrounds him the incidental music of a city street, the orchestral chaos of a scrambling radio, the syncopated grace of migrating birds, the simplicity of an isolated hand clap—and as his roadmap continuously unfolds, he accumulates a vast catalogue of visceral tools to musically recount his experiences. sunizm is a cross section of the artist’s process—an array of complex microcosms overlapping to comprise a thematic whole—gathering field recordings, found instruments, jagged electronics, synthesized chanting, and weaving all into a dense narrative that appears obsessively constructed yet divinely improvised. logos is the first of two singles surrounding the album and is complimented with a monster remix by bartellow (a fellow esp artist, collaborator and good friend of ground) as well as a secret weapon b-side entitled discopazzle, which is exclusive to this single release. attention all humans, animals and plants, ground and the esp institute present, sunizm.

aimed at dancefloors in sleazy bathhouses, seedy basements and soiled warehouses, icarus traxx first offering takes us back to the mythical days of anonymous, muscular power house. delivering no less than three takes of commandment (plus two acapellas), the 12 inch, starring the enigmatic voices of jesse b. simple and charlotte b. good, supplies a choice cut for every disc jockey.

after previously releasing starship commander woooo woooos mastership lp, left ear records have continued excavating the archives of the artist more formally known as omer coleman jr. the result is two handpicked mid 80’s instrumentals salvaged from the original master tapes, as well as an extended vocal edit on the flip for good measure. after laying his alter ego to rest omer made a handful of electronic releases on his own kansas based remo label. of these releases left ear has selected their two favourite instrumentals: lovin babe sure is fun and so good. lovin babe sure is fun was originally released in 85 and was created to celebrate a time in america where the economy was good, people were happy and love was in the air, the essence of which omer captured using his roland 808 and 303 in what may best be described as acid-boogie. so good on the other hand is a sensual downtempo cut shaped with heavy-bass, telephone samples and guitar solos that conjures images of late night rendezvous and compromising scenarios.

there are west coast classics, and then there is music to driveby, the third lp from the group that birthed mc eiht: compton’s most wanted. although the group started in the late ‘80s with multiple mcs (including tha chill and boom bam), by 1992 eiht as pulling the group’s vocal weight – supported by dj mike t on turntables and production – and even producing and co-producing tracks. music to driveby might lack beats-per-minute variety, but to fans that’s not a bad thing. across the board, this is mid-tempo, super deep, funky hip-hop, made for cars creeping along boulevards across the west and south, and it’s about as good as it gets for such purposes. just about filler-free, the album struts intensely and with purpose, as eiht throws tales of cali street life at fans for an hour straight, almost without a break. this solo marathon is given a respite only once, with scarface’s guest spot on “n 2 deep,” an excellent hood roller supported by a soulful guitar lick sampled from lyn collins’ “do your thing.” elsewhere, eiht rolls alone and intensely, on cuts like the classic mash single “hood took me under”, the album’s second single and tim dog attack “who’s fu**ing who?”, the hometown big-up “compton 4 life”, and hustle tales like “jack mode” and “i gots to get over.” after this album, eiht released more classics under his own name, and with similar fan worship. it was the continuation of a legendary career and music to driveby still ranks high on anyone’s “west coast legends” playlist.

favorite recordings presents this new official album reissue of state of emmergency by french band the fizz: a real underrated, complete and intriguing album, originally released in 1986 as a private-press lp and quite hard to find in good conditions nowadays.

the saver flex ep offers up no less than four seriously catchy house jams. blue shoe kicks off the proceedings with some funked up percussion, which immediately shows that kolja s background as a drummer has taught him a thing or two about groove. a looping organ lick, some little shouts in the background, big stabs and a massive kick drum push the track forward. cleverly arranged breakdowns allow for a couple of breathers to keep the party action going throughout. moving on to lax wax , we ease up a little with a lighter beat on top of which filtered piano chords, a live bass and just a touch of guitar set the perfect mood for an organ solo that simply oozes summer vibes. buggel runter rutschen keeps the mood nice and sunny while adding more punch with snappy kicks and snares – a hugely danceable foundation for these guys to show us what is so great about 70s and 80s disco and funk that these styles are amongst their biggest influences. you had better ask a german what kagghaufen means, we don t want to put you off your dinner. we hope it will be just as tasty as this track is with its pounding, straight beat, which is counterpointed by bouncy congas, funky vocal cuts, beautiful pads and healthy dose of squelchy acid for good measure. all of this is effortlessly combined to round off the ep in style.

following his ep for amazing stories, otis makes good on his long time friendship with the partisan crew via four dazzling cuts of future-minded machine funk. from swinging techno to breakbeat and electro, all glued together by that 909 house vibe, the playful side of otis’ unique sound masks an understated swagger that will rock the floor wherever it’s played.
